ECCV 2008 Post-Conference Workshops
October 17th-18th, 2008
Following the European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV) in Marseille, workshops on a variety of current topics in computer vision will be held on October 17 and 18. Proposals are invited for topical high-quality international workshops
The goal of the workshops is to provide an informal forum for researchers to discuss important research issues and challenges.
We aim to build a program that complements the main conference and the tutorials. We encourage workshops to be focused on discussions and on the sharing of ideas, and are especially interested in workshops that promote new emergent research directions, as opposed to workshops that are merely a forum for the presentation of recent results.
No dual submission with ECCV will be allowed.
Organization of the workshops
There will be six hours of workshop meeting per day, split into morning and afternoon sessions, with free time between the sessions for ongoing individual exchange.
For simplicity, workshops will be held on-site at the main conference site, under the ECCV Workshop passport system. The advantage of a passport system is that it gives attendees a broader choice, and simplifies life for many organizers in the sense that budget, workshop approval, registration processing, coffee breaks, etc., are all handled by the organizing committee. Another consequence is that all events will have the same registration rates. The passport system will cover the seminar room, basic A/V (video projector, screen, a sound system if the room requires it) and one coffee break per half day.
The ECCV Organizing Committee will also offer the creation of a DVD with centralized workshop proceedings, for workshops that wish to participate in this. The timing of the breaks will be coordinated among the participating workshops. External sponsorship can be used to cover other expenses such as hard-printed proceedings, invited speakers, travel grants, prices, meals or banquets.
Organizers Responsibilities
Workshop organizers will be responsible for coordinating workshop participation and content (including selecting papers, arranging short informal presentations by domain experts, formulating discussion topics, etc.), moderating the discussion, ensuring they have unambiguous acceptance to attend from any people named as confirmed in the proposal.
Submitting a proposal
Proposals should be emailed as pdf or plain text to the ECCV 2008 Workshops Chair, Frederic Jurie (frederic.jurie-at-inrialpes.fr), before 15 February 2008. We will notify acceptances by 1 March 2008. Proposers are encouraged to ensure their proposal is as coherent and concise as possible. The following information should be provided, either in the e-mail or on a proposed workshop website:
- Workshop name
- Description of what the workshop is to address and accomplish. The proposal should motivate why the topic is of interest, why it should be discussed, and the targeted group of participants; it should be clear why ECCV needs a workshop on this topic and what its impact will be.
- Planned format (e.g., lectures, group discussions, panel discussion, combinations of the above, etc.), names of potential invitees and any confirmed speakers, proposed workshop length.
- Names, e-mails and home pages of the organizer(s). If there is more than one organizer, please designate one organizer as the primary contact.
- Number of participants (please, estimate minimum and maximum probable values for this).
- Expected numbers of submissions, and of acceptances and/or presentations (again probable, minimum and maximum values).
- Full description of the workshop: Draft call for papers; names of proposed program committee members; description of the format of the workshop (talks, posters, demos, invited speakers, etc); information about the reviewing process and standards; information about the proceedings or special issue if any; proposed dates for submission, acceptance notification and camera-ready copy.
- Additional requirements beyond the basic room, A/V and breaks provided by the passport system? - If so, how will they be funded?
If this is one of a series of workshops, the proposal has to demonstrate that this new edition brings some genuine novelty.
Selection Process
The selection will be done by the ECCV Workshop Committee. The selection of Workshops will be mainly based on:
- Relevance of the topics to the interests of ECCV.
- Evidence that the workshop will be focused on emerging fields.
- Evidence that workshop chairs can effectively manage the discussions.
- Caliber of invited speakers (5) Potential impact of the workshop on the field.
- Realism of the schedule.
- Evidence that the workshop aims for a dynamic sharing of ideas and not only presenting results.
We may recommend the merging of multiple overlapping proposals in a particular area; proponents are not obliged to accept such suggestions, in which case we will choose between competing proposals on a given topic. Our aim is to select the best set of workshops for participants; this does not necessarily mean the largest number of workshops.
There will be no extensions granted for proposal submissions.
We look forward to working with workshop chairs to generate a range of interesting, high quality sessions.
